The main heroines are sisters, Marianne and Elinor Dashwood, who have also a younger sister Margaret and elder stepbrother John. At yhe beginning of the story Mr. Dashwood dies and Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters have to move from their home which now has become John's property. Their budget is shoestring, so that they settle down in a small cottage in the country where Marianne and Elionor experience their first love and dissapointment.Marianne is guided especially by her feelings and she blames her elder sister Elionor, who has a more rational view of the world, for being coldand reserved. But finally, she finds out that the sense and sensibility are not inevitably separated matters..

Galvenās varones ir māsas Meriena un Elionora Dešvudas, kurām ir arī jaunāka māsa Mārgareta un vecāks pusbrālis Džons. Stāsta sākumā nomirst miosters Dešvuds, un misis Dešvudai ar meitām jāizvācas no mājās, kas nu nonākusi Džona īpašumā. Viņu līdzekļi ir visai trūcīgi, tādēļ viņas apmetas nelielā lauku namiņā, kur Meriena un Elionora piedzīvo savu pirmo mīlestību un vilšanos. Īpaši Meriena ļaujvaļu jūtām un pārmet vecākajai māsai Elionorai, kurai ir racionālāks pasaules skatījums, ka tā ir vēsa un atturīga. Taču beidzot Meriena aptver, ka prāts un jūtas ne vienmēr ir nošķirami...
